To become a member of the EUMC you can sign up online here. Full year membership costs £35, and single semester membership costs £25. If you'd like to know where your membership fees go to, read more about that in our Money section below.
In order to be insured (by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland and the Sports Union) for activities offered by the club you need to be a paid member of the EUMC and have given us full contact details. The exception to this rule is that non-members are insured (but only by the Sports Union) to go on one meet at any point in the year.
Non-Edinburgh University Students (including non-students)
As our activities are heavily subsidised by the Sports Union, applicants who are not currently studying at the University of Edinburgh are required to pass an application process through the Sports Union Development Committee. Members are assessed using a point system, with a minimum of 6 points needed to join the club. Points are allocated as follows:
Member of Staff - 6
Coaching Qualification - 4 (Eg. SPA, SML)
University of Edinburgh Graduate - 3
Health and safety Qualification (including First Aid) - 3
Minibus Licence / Permit - 2
Driving Licence - 1
Discretionary Points (decided by Development Committee) - 2
If you pass the minimum requirement of 6 points then please get in touch with our club Secretary through the contact form on the Committee page, and they will submit an application to EUSU for you. In certain circumstances, high levels of experience can be counted as a coaching qualification (e.g: 40+ munros, 40+ trad lead climbs, DofE supervisor/assessor work, winter climbing experience).
In order to go on a meet, you MUST sign-up on the Wednesday beforehand. There are limited spaces on meets, and places are filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. Sign-up here on the Wednesday before the meet.
During semester-time we have a social every Thursday, usually starting at 8.00pm. These range from the sensible to the weird and wacky, but always fun! Usually we end up at the pub afterwards (The Tron), and then Hive...
To see what meets and socials are coming up, check out our Events page.
The climb mailing list is used to circulate information about the EUMC. Some important announcements like changes to meet dates and times are made this way, and most club events are advertised over it.

If you want to know more...
We have several events during Freshers' Week at the beginning of every year - come along to get an idea of what we do! You'll find us at the Freshers' Sports Fair, where there will be people on hand to answer any questions you might have and encourage you to come along to our events. We have the Slideshow; the new President puts together lots of photos of the previous year, and we all drink and watch in a lecture hall. This gives a good insight into the kind of things you might be doing with us, and you'll get to meet everyone at the pub afterwards. Finally, we have the Cobbler meet - this a day trip up the Cobbler on the final weekend of Freshers' Week.
If all your questions STILL haven't been answered, you are welcome to ask anything on the Chat Page or on the Facebook group. You can also get in touch with all of our committee members by using the contact form on the Committee page.
If you would like to buy any gear we would recommend Tiso or Cotswold, both of which can be found on Rose Street in Edinburgh. At Tiso your membership card entitles you to an Outdoor Experience card, which gives the holder a 10% discount in all Tiso and Alpine Bikes* stores across Scotland. All you have to do as a EUMC member is pop in to your local Tiso store with your membership card/details and sign up (it takes 5 minutes). Cotswold gives a 10% discount to EUMC members.
*Bikes are limited to a 5% discount with 10% on all other products including servicing.
The EUMC is a student run club primarily funded by membership subs and a small Sports Union grant. This (and any money we manage to fundraise) is the only income we have to subsidise meets, and so the meet fees are vital to us. We spend all of our income each year running the club and have no "spare" cash to play with. This means that it is essential that we collect in all money owed to us by members.
By signing up for a meet on Wednesdays you have agreed to pay for that meet whether you go on it or not. Anyone with any outstanding debts to the Club will be unable to sign up for any further Club events, including socials, until they have paid.
Finally, our new sponsorship deal with The Tron depends on acceptable behaviour of all members at all times. Please respect the Club's good relationship with the pub and don't do anything to jeopardise this.
